Rosemary Wander, who has been associatse provost for researchand public/private sector partnerships at UNCG sincew 2002 and before that chairedf the school’s Department of Nutrition, will leave to become vice provosf for graduate studies and research at in Washington, D.C., on July 1. “o think of this as my next grea adventure,” said Wander, who before coming to UNCG in 1999 held facultty appointments at Oregon State and MississippjiState universities. “In my job here I’ved done a lot of work with our legislatordsin Washington, D.C., and so workinyg at American University and livin in D.C.
will be very While Wander will be missed at where she helped increasethe university’s sponsorefd research levels by 40 percent to $39 her departure will spark the search for a new vice chancello r who would serve directly on the executive team of Chancello r Linda Brady. That person would elevate the administrative profile of the researc h and economic development functions at the schoool and spend more time trying to attract federal and private researcgh dollars tothe campus.
Brady identified establishing such a position as an earlt priority when she arrived at UNCGlast summer, but the idea was put on hold when the stated budget shortfall forced hiring freezes and othef cuts at all state campuses. Accordingh to Provost David Perrin, though, Wander’s departure will restarrt the process. “We had considered freezing the search, but with Rosemary’s decisioh we’ve decided to search and fill the (vice chancellor) position as soon as possible,” Perri n said. That would be January at the Perrin said, but more likely next summer. In the meantime, otherr UNCG administrators will divvyup Wander’x responsibilities.
Wander said she’as glad UNCG will be moving research and economifc development further up thecommancd chain. The university has come a long way in increasinhg funding support and achieving a higher research classification but it’s getting harder to find availablre sponsorship dollars that can generate research jobs and new companies to contributew to the Triad’s economy, she “It’s a strong move becausew it’s a statement by the campus of how valuable researcn is here,” Wander said.
“It’s going to be very difficulft over the next few years becauss of the internationalfinancial crisis, but I thinj UNCG is well-positioned to be a major player in yearas to come.”
