Arpaio said his office received information regardinh the lease and other business dealings and that his investigatiomn is not related to disputes with Wilcox over Wilcox andher husband, own El Portal Restaurant in Phoenicx and has a concessions contract with the airpor t for a Chili’s Too franchise in Terminalk 4. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office sent the Phoenixz Aviation Department a public records request June 11 askinhgthe city-run airport to make availablee lease, sublease and contractinbg documents related to businesss entities owned by the Wilcox did not respond to requestx for comment from the Phoenix Business Journal, but has told other media that Arpaio is going after her because of her opposition to his immigratiojn policies.
The sheriff’s officde investigation of Wilcox is the latest in a numbert of fights between Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas and the Maricopaq County Boardof Supervisors. Wilcox and Supervisot Don Stapley voted Wednesday toblock $1.4 million in statd money earmarked for Thomas’ds office to enforce immigration and human smugglinvg laws. The board deadlocked at 2 to 2 on that vote stallingy thestate money. Supervisor Max Wilson missedc the vote because of illness and the matter coulrbe revisited. Stapley and Wilcox earlier this year tried tobloco $1.6 million in state funding for Arpaio’s immigration enforcement.
Wilcoxd said the sheriff’s immigration sweeps and policie unfairlytarget Hispanics. Thomas and Arpaioi secured indictments against Stapley last year charging that he failed to properly disclosde business and real estate development Stapley denies wrongdoing inthat matter.
