Allan A. Smith, who recentlyt retired as senior vice presidentof Kauai-based Grove will head the department and also serve as interikm chairman of the Board of Land and Natural Resources untilp Lingle names a permanent replacemen t for Young. Young was denied reconfirmation bya 15-8 vote in the stater Senate on April 24. Bob Masuda, the department'se deputy director who oversees the Bureau of is also leaving his post onMay 30, Lingle'sz office said on Lingle, meanwhile, named Young interim deputy with the statee Water Commission, a vacant exempt positioj within his former department.
Young will also assisy Smith with the transitiom and take over some of the administrative duties handleddby Masuda. Lingle said she appreciated Smith's willingnesd to run the department whilea 30-member searcu committee, which will be chaired by Young, looksx for a permanent director. "Allan's historuy of leadership experience in land management and agribusinessz will ensure a seamless transition as DLNR continuesz to workwith environmental, cultural, business, and agricultural groups to manage and enhance Hawaii's natural and cultura resources," she said in a statement.
Smith, a Kauau native, was responsible for managing Grove Farm's 40,00 acres on Kauai and directedthe company'sd land development, construction and rock quarrying and crushing businesses. Smith also administered the company'w agro-forestry and diversified agricultural leases, and oversaw Grovwe Farm's commercial and industrial propertiees activities, according to a news released from Lingle's office. Smitnh also worked for Amfac, Inc., on Kauaj for 19 years.
